A Critical Partnership with IRI Strengthens Democracy in Five Nigerian States

Kaduna, Plateau, Kano, Rivers, and Delta States, 2011 – In a pivotal year for Nigeria’s democratic process, the International Republican Institute (IRI) partnered with Basketball for Peace (BB4P) to implement a crucial voters’ education program across five key states: Kaduna, Plateau, Kano, Rivers, and Delta. This initiative leveraged BB4P’s established community reach and innovative engagement strategies to foster greater civic participation and ensure an informed electorate.

The Imperative for Voters’ Education in 2011

The 2011 general elections were a significant moment for Nigeria, following years of democratic transitions. Ensuring that citizens understood their rights, the voting process, and the importance of their participation was paramount for the credibility and fairness of the elections. Misinformation, apathy, and a lack of understanding of electoral procedures often hinder robust democratic engagement.

IRI, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing democracy worldwide, recognized BB4P’s unique ability to connect with diverse community segments, particularly youth, through the universal appeal of basketball and its associated peace-building values.

BB4P’s Approach: Education Through Engagement

BB4P, founded by the legendary Coach OBJ, is renowned for using sports, specifically basketball, as a tool for youth development, conflict resolution, and community building. This voters’ education project seamlessly integrated these principles:

  • Community Workshops & Dialogues: BB4P organized interactive workshops and town hall meetings in selected communities within each of the five states. These sessions went beyond simply explaining how to cast a ballot; they focused on:
    • The Importance of Voting: Emphasizing the power of individual votes in shaping governance and accountability.
    • Understanding Electoral Processes: Clarifying voter registration, polling procedures, and the role of different electoral bodies.
    • Peaceful Participation: Promoting non-violence before, during, and after elections, a core tenet of BB4P’s mission.
    • Candidate Evaluation: Encouraging citizens to assess candidates based on issues, rather than divisive sentiments.
